V-ray 5 Update 1 for Maya from Chaos becomes the first version of this software that supports working VFX processes based on USD (universal scene Description) from Pixar. Artists can upload USD files using the new Maya USD plugin that comes bundled with the software in Maya 2022 and visualize them in V-Ray using the mayaUsdProxy node.
The initial implementation supports static and animated mesh transformations and deformations, as well as VRay materials, textures, display and partitioning encoded in USD files. Users have the opportunity to export files vrscene from V-Ray for Maya and render them in offline V-Ray mode, but it’s not possible to export V-Ray light sources and all types of display.
Also a new Opacity Cutout tool is introduced, which converts low-poly geometry with textures with opacity overlay into the actual slice geometry, thereby reducing the rendering time.
Maya users now have access to the library, which includes more than 500 ready-made materials presented in v-Ray 5 for 3ds Max. There is also a new system for the gradual calculation of caustics without the need for preliminary calculation of photon maps, and dome light sources can be additively combined within the scene.
